# Assigning equipment responsibility

**Assigning equipment responsibility** defines the employee or **workspace** to which the company permanently assigns a piece of equipment.

The responsible party remains responsible regardless of who physically holds the equipment at a particular moment. Do not confuse **responsibility** with the **current holder**.

> **Key rule:** ordinary equipment transfers change the current holder, not the permanent responsibility assignment.

## Responsibility is the primary process

In Inventory+, responsibility assignment takes priority over ordinary transfers. A transfer records day-to-day physical movement; responsibility defines who is accountable to the company.

When a new responsible employee confirms acceptance, Inventory+ assigns responsibility and also aligns the equipment's current holder with the new assignment.

Existing completed history is preserved. Conflicting pending operations are closed or made irrelevant so the current state remains consistent.

## Assigning responsibility to an employee

The employee must confirm acceptance. Until confirmation, responsibility has not moved.

After confirmation, the employee becomes both the **responsible employee and current holder**. The equipment appears in **My Equipment**.

The responsible employee may later transfer it temporarily to another employee. This changes the current holder but does not change responsibility.

## Assigning responsibility to a workspace

Equipment can be assigned to a workspace rather than a person. Because a workspace cannot confirm an operation, one of the employees responsible for that workspace confirms on its behalf.

The history records the specific employee who performed the confirmation while the equipment remains assigned to the workspace.

## How to assign responsibility

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the equipment record">Open the equipment for which responsibility must be set or changed.</Step>
  <Step title="Open Actions">Select **Assign responsibility**.</Step>
  <Step title="Select the responsible party">Choose an employee or workspace.</Step>
  <Step title="Confirm acceptance">The selected employee, or a responsible employee of the workspace, confirms acceptance.</Step>
</Steps>

Only after confirmation is the operation complete.

## Responsibility cannot simply be removed

Equipment must not be left without permanent responsibility. To change responsibility, assign another employee or workspace instead of removing the existing assignment.

<Info>
  **Responsibility assignment is the primary accounting process.** When responsibility changes, Inventory+ updates the current state, resolves conflicting pending operations and preserves the history of completed actions automatically.
