# Inventory write-off

Use a write-off when inventory must be permanently removed from the recorded balance, for example after consumption, wear or another reason accepted by the company.

Inventory can be written off **from an employee or from a workspace**. The workflow is the same in both cases.

## Create a write-off document

Open the employee or workspace record and click **Write off** in the Inventory section. The document shows the employee or workspace from which the quantity will be removed.

## Add items

Click **Add inventory**. Inventory+ shows only the items currently held by the selected employee or workspace, including the variant and available balance.

Select one or more items and add them to the document.

## Enter quantities

For each item, enter the quantity to write off.

The quantity **cannot exceed the current balance** held by that employee or workspace. Use **Set maximum** when the entire available quantity should be written off.

A comment can be added to the document if needed.

## Complete the write-off

Review the document and click **Write off**.

After completion:

* the specified quantity is removed from the employee's or workspace's balance;
* the company's total balance for that inventory variant decreases by the same quantity;
* the write-off operation is recorded in the system.

<Info>
  A transfer moves inventory between holders and does not change the company's total quantity. A write-off permanently removes quantity from current accounting and therefore reduces the company-wide balance.
